Musings & Thoughts for Monday, June 28, 2021, or: Of Summer Colds and Dark Anniversaries

Hi there, Dear Reader. It’s mid-morning here in New Hometown, Florida on Monday, June 28, 2021. Currently, the temperature is 79˚F (27˚C) under sunny skies. With humidity at 50% and the wind blowing from the east-northeast at 7 MPH (9 KM/H), the feels-like temperature is 78˚F (26˚C). Today, we can expect scattered rain showers and a high of 92˚F (33˚C). Tonight, scattered rain showers will continue, and the low will be 75˚F (24˚C). The Air Quality Index (AQI) Is 48 or Good.

I still feel sick today; the symptoms of what I think is a summer cold have eased off a bit. My nose is not as runny today as it was yesterday, but my sinuses are still stuffy, I have occasional violent and unpleasant sneezing fits, and I have a persistent headache that simply will not go away. I have some Walgreen’s Cold & Flu medicine – which I hate because it’s a syrup and not gel caps – and it has helped relieve the worst of the cold-related indicators, but I am still not quite over the hump with this malady.

I am doing my best to take care of myself; I drink lots of water to keep hydrated, and the Caregiver gave me some “baby aspirins” and CVS AirShield dietary supplements that, based on the packaging and ingredients, are generic versions of the better-known Airborne effervescent pills. I still haven’t tried those, but as soon as I post this, I will.

The downside to feeling under the weather is that I’m probably going to have to take a rest day from writing. After all, it’s hard to focus on anything, be it a project you are working on or a leisure activity like watching a movie, when your nose starts running as though someone opened a spigot in your sinuses and you can’t make it stop. As I said In yesterday’s post, on Saturday, I tried watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in all of its 4K UHD remastered glory, but I had to reach for tissues to blow my nose so often that I lost all interest in the movie.

What will I do today then? I have no idea, Dear Reader. I’ll take my medicines, of course, and if the headache eases off even just a little, I might read or try to watch TV while lying back on my futon. Or, for a change of scenery, I might go to the living room and read there.

Oh, and I just realized that today is the 107th anniversary of the assassination – by Serb nationalists – of Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo. The two pistol shots fired by Gavrilo Princip, 19, not only ended the lives of the presumptive heir to the Hapsburg throne and his spouse, but they also set in motion the chain of events that led to the beginning of World War I. As a result of this terrorist act, Princip (who died of tuberculosis at Terezin prison in 1918 while serving a 20-year sentence for the assassination), lit the fuse that caused the powder keg that was Europe in 1914 to explode.

Well, Dear Reader, that’s all the news I have to share with you, so I’ll close for now. Until next time, stay safe, stay healthy, and I’ll catch you on the sunny side of things.

    1. I have not been vaccinated yet; I am waiting on “the Caregiver” to take me to the nearby Publix for the shot(s).

As to the symptoms, they are mild (if perhaps annoying). They’ve subsided since I posted this a few hours ago. So I am sure it’s only a cold.
