Musings & Thoughts for Tuesday, August 16, 2022, or: An Update on My Latest Order from Amazon*

  • This wasn’t the topic I wanted to delve into today, though!

Well, it’s late morning here in my corner of Lithia, Florida on Tuesday, August 16, 2022. As I write this – with the digital album J.S. Bach Orchestra: Air on the G String and Violin Concertos playing on my Amazon Music app – I am still a bit a bit sleepy. I woke up less than an hour ago (it was 9:05 AM when I made my way to the kitchen and checked the time) and found my usual cup of café con leche waiting for me at my place on the kitchenette table.

The Caregiver starts work shortly before 8 AM – as a county employee, she has a fixed schedule, and since the courthouse begins operations at 8, remote office workers must be ready at least 10 minutes beforehand – so she probably set it down around 7:30 AM. I’m usually up by then, and normally my café con leche (which is sort of a Cuban-style latte) is piping hot.

But because I woke up at 2:30 AM to go to the “throne room” and answer the call of an overfull bladder, only to have a hard time falling asleep, I overslept, so my café con leche was as cold as a frappuccino. I still enjoyed it, and I appreciate the Caregiver’s thoughtfulness. She doesn’t have to make it for me; she knows that even though I can’t cook on a gas stove, I can use the coffeemaker to brew my own coffee.

Three of those Ordered 4K titles will arrive today. The Star Trek box set has a September 6 street date. The George Pal double-feature? I don’t know yet.

As you know, today is D-Day (D for Delivery) for my three movie-related pre-orders from Amazon (along with two bottles of Listerine mouthwash and a 48-count box of different flavored Quaker Instant Oatmeal packets). If all goes well, my package with Red Dawn: Collector’s Edition, the steelbook with Jurassic World: Dominion, and the -admittedly superfluous – 6-film box set of Jurassic World: The Ultimate Collection and the Listerine mouthwash will be placed on an Amazon Prime delivery van at the Seffner distribution center within the next hour and sent on its way here.

According to my order status on Amazon, my stuff was, as I predicted, sent from Amazon’s larger distribution facility in Davenport, which is 40 miles away from Lithia on a straight line but – due to the zigzags of the highway system – is 56.3 miles away as the delivery truck drives. That’s why Amazon could predict with a reasonable amount of certainty that my packages would arrive by 11 PM today.

The last update says a driver has been assigned for this delivery, so it’s possible that it will be Out for Delivery by the time I publish this post.

Aside from that, I don’t have much to say other than that I wish I’d been able to go back to sleep faster than I did after that predawn trip to the bathroom. I don’t know how long I was on my futon, trying to get comfortable and drop off to a restful state of drowsiness. At one point, I almost turned on my lamp to read a book, but I changed my mind before I even made a move to flick the switch to ON. I knew that once I turned on the light, I would stay up for the rest of the morning and I’d be tired, irritable, and unable to think clearly for the rest of the day.

As it is, I planned on writing a post about my opinion regarding the real – and disturbing – possibility that former President Trump (among other things) violated the Espionage Act and either sold or gave away to Russia or other potential adversaries classified information in documents that he took from the White House (in violation of another federal statute, the Presidential Records Act) when he moved out on January 20, 2021.

I’m angry not just at Trump and his close advisers for allegedly doing this, but also at the right-wing fanatics in the Republican Party, Fox News, and far-right-leaning conservative media who are framing this as a “politically motivated witch-hunt” to make sure that Trump can’t run for President in 2024. That America’s second-oldest major political party has embraced Trumpism in order to stay in power is bad enough, but that ordinary Americans are equally blind to these high crimes and misdemeanors and continue to pine for “the greatest President in U.S. history” is a tragedy and a clear and present danger to the continued existence of American democracy.

I want to write about all that, but I’m so tired that the topic will have to wait for another day. Right now, this trifle of a blog post – which is bound to excite only those who like either Red Dawn (1984) or the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise or constant Amazon shoppers – is the best I can do.

And with that, Dear Reader, I shall close this post. I must go and take a shower (which I’ll do once the bathroom is not in use), put on fresh clothes, then try and prepare something for lunch. After all, man does not live on café con leche alone. So until next time, stay safe, stay healthy, and I’ll catch you on the sunny side of things.

  1. I agree with you Alex. Trump, is despicable con-man but he has his blind and vile cultish followers defend him relentlessly while attacking honest and decent men. It’s a shame. But it is a never ending story. Enjoy your Jurassic Park.
