Musings & Thoughts for Saturday, December 16, 2023, or: A Quick Update from Madison

A Quick Update

It’s early evening here in Madison, New Hampshire (it feels strange not to type “Lithia, Florida” anymore). Because we’re in the northern latitudes, it gets dark here in winter; the sun set at 4:07 PM. It’s also cold – the temperature is 34 degrees Fahrenheit/1 degree Celsius, and we are expected to get rain tonight and tomorrow, and there is an areal flooding warning for Maine and most of New Hampshire.

Today we went to Conway to do some shopping for food and other essentials. I bought a few necessary items, including milk, eggs, and cereal.

I actually went out twice today: once to Home Depot with Patti’s husband Marc. I have seen the inside of far too many Home Depot and Lowe’s stores in Florida, so I voluntarily stayed in the car while Marc quickly did his shopping. Not long after we got back to Madison, Patti asked if I wanted to go to the Market Basket and food shop there. I actually needed to get the stuff I mentioned earlier, so I said “yes.”

It was a nice excursion. I got to see my first New England supermarket: the Market Basket. It’s smaller than the Winn-Dixie near my former home in Miami, but it’s organized almost the same way. I used my Visa card to pay for my purchases, half-convinced the transaction would be declined since my billing address is in Lithia and most of my charges come from either there or Miami, which is where I got that credit card originally.

On the way back home from Market Basket, Patti stopped the car at a spot by the road with a designated overlook spot where you can see the mountains in the Washington Mountains valley. It was so impressive! Wow. Words can’t begin to describe how awesome the sights are in New Hampshire.

I still have quite a ways to go before I become used to the cold, though!

    1. It is, but it’s awfully cold for this (former) Florida man.

I hate to tell you this, but you haven’t experienced anything yet. January and February can be brutal. Maybe it will be warmer this year.
