Late Morning, Tuesday, December 19, 2023, Madison, New Hampshire

Good morning, folks. As I begin this post, it’s late morning in New Hampshire. It’s a beautiful day so far; the rain that has been soaking this part of the state has cleared off, at least for now, and the sky is clear, at least over Edelweiss, the development near Madison that is now “home” to me. Presently, the temperature is 43°F/6°C under sunny conditions, but the feels-like temperature is 52°F/11°C. Today’s forecast for the Conway/Madison area calls for mostly sunny skies and a high of 47°F/8°C.
I don’t have much to report today; let’s just say that the settling-in phase of my move from Florida to Madison has been…interesting. I’ve had to learn why “layers” – re clothing – are important up here in Yankee land, that it gets really dark starting around 4 PM here cos of the Earth’s 23-degree tilt on its axis and its position vis a vis the Sun at this time of year, and that I now live just seven miles away from the border with Maine.
I am, of course, more than a bit homesick for Florida and the folks that I lived with from 2016 till until a week ago. And, of course, I am more than a little worried about how I will fare here. I am not a fan of cold weather, but since Florida is not particularly a good state to live in unless you’re well-off, able-bodied, and, seemingly, conservative/Republican/a Trump supporter, I couldn’t find alternatives to my housing situation there. So…I’m here now, even though I wish the move had not been necessary.
Oh, yeah. I almost forgot. My first order from Amazon as a New Hampshirite – unofficial till I get a state ID and can register to vote – will arrive today.
Originally, the package that I’m expecting from Amazon (but delivered by UPS) was supposed to only contain the latest revised version of Reunion: A Story, but I somehow misplaced my Kindle Fire HD 8 tablet at one of the places where my friend Patti and I stayed while driving from Florida to the Granite State, so after disconnecting the device from my Amazon account, I ordered a replacement tablet on December 15.

So, ugh. My first days as a Granite Stater started with an unexpected – and expensive – replacement for something I shouldn’t have lost in the first place.
Well, that’s all the news that’s fit to print – as The New York Times says on its masthead – so I’ll sign off for now. Until next time, stay safe, stay safe, and I’ll catch you on the sunny (if rather chilly) side of things.

What a great view! I’m very jealous – I can only imagine what the fall colors are going to be like this autumn.
When I move to a new place, I don’t consider it official until I’ve got a new library card. Sure, the state ID/driver’s license and the voter registration are required to make it official on the state level, but the library card is a mark that I’m embracing my new abode.
I was pretty insulted after my last move – since it was within the same county as my former home, and because it’s a locality where they don’t put home addresses directly on the cards, I had to settle for keeping the old card, and knowing that my address had merely been updated in their database. So disappointing!

At least you have a beautiful backyard and in June you well get all the daylight hours back. I am sorry you lost your Kindle Fire HD 8 tablet.

On the bright side, the new tablet has a larger screen. A bit over 2 inches more than the lost tablet’s.

Spring makes up for all the cold.

Well, I’ve lived in places where it gets cold at least during fall and winter (Seville, Spain) or cold year-round (Bogota, Colombia), but I was younger. Also, the timing (and circumstances for this move) were not exactly the best.
I’d put on some nice gloves that I was given last week before leaving Florida, but then I can’t type.
My first winter in “near Canada” is going to be a doozy.
