Musings & Thoughts for Friday, December 29, 2023, or: Here Comes the Rain Again….

Late Morning, Friday, December 29, 2023, Madison, New Hampshire (M-Day + 17)

“The thing about dark skies and rainy days is that, if you wait long enough, the sun will always shine again.” Leah Atwood, After the Rain

It is a dark, rainy, and frigid morning here in my corner of Madison, New Hampshire. As I write this, the temperature is 38°F/3°C under light rain. Today’s forecast, unfortunately for me, calls for more of the same, on and off, throughout the day. The high will be 39°F/4°C Tonight, Carroll County can expect a wintry mix of light rain and snow showers, as well as a low of 35°F/2°C.

I probably wouldn’t fret so much about this weather if (a) I didn’t have to go to Market Basket to get some badly-needed groceries, and (b) if cold temperatures didn’t affect my mood the way they do. It’s bad enough that I am still not thrilled that I had to move at all, but I am not particularly fond of temperatures below a certain comfort level. (Of course, extreme heat also irks me, so….)

If the skies were clear and it wasn’t raining – or snowing – I wouldn’t mind so much. But the gray clouds and intermittent drizzle add an aura of gloom that gnaws at my subconscious and makes me wish I’d been able to stay in Florida. And knowing that I have to go out there because I’m running out of milk, coffee creamer, orange juice, and other essential items that I need to survive isn’t making things easier.

I must be ready to leave by 11 AM, so I’ll close for now. If I feel up to writing – and there’s a chance that I might not – I’ll be back later with an update.

  1. Finished “Reunion” last night. Nice, snappy read. I’ll try to get a review to you before the weekend (and the year) is through. I’d like to let you look at it privately, before I post it here. Is there a preferable email, or…? Let me know. Peace, Alex!

    1. Paul, I’m pleased that you liked “Reunion.” It’s hard to believe that I wrote the first draft over a three-day period back in 1998 (which is why its “Present Day” scenes are set that year), and that it actually became, with some finessing, something worth publishing.

As for feedback, you can try the Contact function on my WordPress blog thingy. I received a nice message from my college journalism professor re “Reunion” there…which not only prompted the revisions to the novella you gave J, but also motivated me to write the follow-up novel, “Reunion: Coda.”

    2. Great, Alex. I’ll try that route. It will likely be tomorrow, at least. I’m going to the “Arizona Bowl” today. Not something I much care about, but some dear friends of ours invited us, so we want to go for their sake. We took them to opening night of the Roadrunners season a couple months back, so… Tomorrow, I’ll have more time.

You might have to take out a loan before you go to the grocery store. Rooster and I went yesterday and were shocked at the prices.

    1. Nope. not me. I got what I needed and still have enough on my EBT card for another food shop before it’s reloaded. Of course, I’m buying food for just me, so…..
