Late Morning, Monday, October 7, 2024, Madison, New Hampshire

Less than an hour ago, I woke up to a gray, gloomy, cold, and rainy autumn morning. It was so dark when I wandered blearily out of my bedroom and into the living room that I thought it was six in the morning. Nope. According to the clock on the microwave, it was almost 9 AM even though the view from the living room was more of a pre-sunrise tableau than what it was: a rainy Monday in New England.

Currently, the temperature is 52°C (11°C) under light rain conditions, although my PC’s Weather app says the feels-like temperature is 60°F (16°C). And thanks to a cold front that’s passing through next-door state Maine – seven miles to the east –it will be raining off and on all day today.

Today stands out as one of the most miserable days, weather-wise, since spring marked the end of the snowy season. The chill in the air combines with the dreariness of the grey clouds, creating an uninviting atmosphere. To top it off, the relentless rain will force Other Tenant and me to be “confined to quarters,” as they say in military lingo.

It could have been worse, though. If I’d stayed in the Tampa Bay area instead of moving here, I would be hunkering down as Hurricane Milton bears down on the Sunshine State as a Category 4 storm.

Weekend Update, Part the Second, or: An Unremarkable Sunday

There’s not a lot I can say about yesterday. I did what I normally do on weekends when I adhere to my “no working on the novel on days off” rule. I wrote my daily blog post. I played several hands of solitaire (patience) on my computer. I watched several YouTube videos. I listened to music on my Amazon Music app. I had lentil soup for lunch, New England-style clam chowder for dinner, and ran out of bread and milk. I also went out for a walk and played Regiments for a while.

I lead such an exciting life, huh?
