Musings & Thoughts for Monday, November 2, 2020, or: Getting Ready for Day Two of NaNoWriMo 2020

Hi, there, Dear Reader. As I start this, it is almost noon here in New Hometown, Florida. A cold front must have passed through the area last night; it was chilly earlier this morning when I went for a brief walk, but now the current temperature is 70˚F (21˚C) under sunny skies. With the wind blowing from the northeast at 17 MPH (28 KM/H) and humidity at 58%, the feels-like temperature is 70˚F (21˚C). The forecast for the rest of the day calls for sunny skies and a high of 73˚F (23˚C).

About 30 minutes ago I went to the park with a book about the Normandy campaign tucked under my arm with the intention to sit on “my” bench for, oh, maybe 45 minutes and read for a while about the Battle of the Hedgerows and Operation COBRA, the American offensive effort to break out of the confines of the bocage country and – by extension – the Normandy beachhead. The temperature was bearable because (a) I wore my Star Wars Film Concert Series windbreaker and the matching baseball cap and (b) the sun was out and felt comfortably warm. Of course, the bench where I usually sit is in the shade and it was much cooler there, but the temperature was not an issue for me.

It was sunny, and the neighborhood looked nice, but it was quite windy, too. (Photo by the author)

What was problematic was the wind. As you can see from my usual weather report – a habit I picked up when I was writing blog posts on PersonaPaper  – we have quite a breezy day here. In fact, on the way to the park I had to keep one hand on my cap because it was so gusty outside that it nearly flew off my head twice. And when I got to my favorite bench and tried to read, the wind tugged at the book’s pages and made it hard for me to read without getting annoyed. After waiting for a few minutes to see if the breeze would calm down a bit and noticed that it was, instead, getting windier, I gave up and came back home.

I will be starting my day’s writing session for NaNoWriMo 2020 in a little while. I wrote the prologue yesterday, so I already have 1,402 words – of the 50,000 total – logged in on my NaNoWriMo participant’s page. I also earned three activity badges yesterday: First Day Update, Update Your Writing Progress, and Update More than Once in One Day. I still haven’t come up with a narrative thread for today’s contribution to The Tonic of Their Victory – that’s why I wanted to read a little more about the mid-July fighting in Normandy before I resumed work today – but yesterday I had no clue about how to even start the novel in the first place.

Before I start writing, though, I should have a snack and grab a bottle of drinking water. Or a can of Coke. Perhaps even look at a couple of maps of Normandy to get the lay of the land, as it were.

And with that, my friend, I must take my leave of you, at least for now. Take care, stay healthy, and as always, please be kind to others.
