Hey, Constant Reader. It’s early afternoon here in New Hometown, Florida on Sunday, January 24, 2021. It looks like it’s a nice day; the current temperature is 79˚F (26˚C) – the forecast high – under partly sunny skies. With humidity at 54% and the wind blowing from the east-northeast at 3 MPH (5 KM/H), the feels-like temperature is 79˚F (26˚C). The rest of the afternoon will bring partly sunny skies; tonight, we can expect partly cloudy skies and a low of 63˚F (17˚C).

It’s been 18 days since the U.S. Capitol was attacked by a mob of Trump supporters who, incited by former President Donald J. Trump, sought to stop Congress from certifying the Electoral College results of the 2020 Presidential election. At least five persons, including four Trump supporters and one U.S. Capitol Police officer, died as a result of the politically motivated attack on the iconic Capitol building.
In the aftermath of the January 6 attack on democracy – for that is what it was, really – many of the participants in the “Stop the Steal” insurrection have been arrested and charged by Federal authorities. Some were arrested on the spot by Capitol Police and District of Columbia law enforcement agents; others still managed to return to their homes in all 50 states but were either identified by the FBI through their posts on social media or turned in by friends, family members, or even ex-spouses who do not condone the suspects’ actions on that terrible day.
Why would anyone in his or her right mind attempt to obstruct the U.S. Congress during a mostly ceremonial legislative procedure – the certification of an already carefully vetted, lawful election by the various state electors in the Electoral College – and reverse the results of a Presidential election?
Well, for starters, you have to understand that many of Donald Trump’s supporters live in an alternate reality where black is white, up is down, and a square peg fits into a round hole. If Trump says, “We will build a great beautiful wall on our border to keep ‘bad hombres’ out, and Mexico will pay for it,” they believe it, even when the great beautiful wall is not built and what few sections are erected are financed by taking money out of the Defense Department’s budget.

The other factor – the main one, in fact, and the reason why Donald J. Trump will become the first President to be tried in the Senate after leaving office – is that the Make America Great Again (MAGA) crowd was whipped up into a frenzy by claims made by Trump and many Republicans that the “radical left Democrats” stole the election via massive voter fraud.
Here is an excerpt from the former President’s speech right before the mob massed around the Capitol and commenced its seditious attack:
All of us here today do not want to see our election victory stolen by emboldened radical left Democrats, which is what they’re doing and stolen by the fake news media. That’s what they’ve done and what they’re doing. We will never give up. We will never concede, it doesn’t happen. You don’t concede when there’s theft involved. – Donald J. Trump’s “Stop the Steal” Speech
January 6 did not occur like an out-of-the-blue attack like the September 11, 2001 terror strikes by Al Qaeda. Anyone who was paying attention last summer and fall could have predicted that Donald Trump and his supporters were not going to go gently into the night if a Democratic candidate won the 2020 Presidential election. No. Trump and his campaign set the stage for the Capitol breach as early as late spring of 2020, when it looked like the COVID-19 pandemic might seriously affect the elections, especially where voting in person at polling places was involved.
Per a BBC News article, Trump says universal mail-in voting would be ‘catastrophic’, from August 16, 2020:
Universal mail voting would make the US “a laughing stock”, President Donald Trump has said, as he continues his vocal opposition to postal voting.
It comes after the US Postal Service (USPS) warned that millions of mail-in votes may not arrive in time to be counted in November’s election.
A record number of people are expected to vote by mail due to the pandemic.
Critics have blamed the new USPS head – a loyal supporter of President Donald Trump – for a slowdown in deliveries.
Speaking at a news conference on Saturday evening, the president said he had no issue with absentee voting, which he himself uses.
But he added: “Universal mail-in voting is going to be catastrophic, it’s going to make our country the laughing stock of the world.”
“The problem with the mail-in voting, number one, is you’re never going to know when the election is over,” he continued.
He went on to say that the result of November’s vote might not be known “for months or for years, because these ballots are going to be lost, they’re going to be gone”.
Twelve days later, National Public Radio reported that Trump was still attacking vote by mail in the middle of a deadly pandemic.
According to Ignoring FBI And Fellow Republicans, Trump Continues Assault On Mail-In Voting, published on August 28:
In the face of contradictory messages coming from members of his own party, members of the U.S. intelligence community and even a member of his own family, President Trump continues his months-long campaign against efforts to expand voting by mail amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“The fraud and abuse will be an embarrassment to our Country,” Trump tweeted Wednesday.
On Monday, he claimed without evidence that mail ballots may purposely be manipulated to be sent to Democratic areas and not Republican areas. And on Sunday, he decried a system of ballot return that the federal government calls “secure and convenient” in official documents.
And, of course, Trump continued to beat on the “election fraud” drum from November 4, 2020 all the way through January 6, brainwashing his devoted MAGA followers into believing that he and his “movement” had been robbed of victory at the polls.
Here are three quotes from Donald Trump from November 4, 2020 that harp on this theme:
“Millions and millions of people voted for us tonight. And a very sad group of people is trying to disenfranchise that group of people, and we won’t stand for it.” – Donald Trump, November 4, 2020
“This is a fraud on the American public. This is an embarrassment to our country. We were getting ready to win this election. Frankly, we did win this election. So our goal now is to ensure the integrity.” – Donald Trump, November 4, 2020
“We’ll be going to the US Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop. We don’t want them to find any ballots at 4 o’clock in the morning and add them to the list, OK?” – Donald Trump, November 4, 2020
If you are a Trump loyalist like Frisco real estate agent Jenna Ryan, who thinks Trump’s bust should be added to Mount Rushmore and was part of the “Stop the Steal” mob on January 6, this is how you’d probably express yourself:

Pence has been a loyal VP. I’ve always trusted him completely. Usually the VP doesn’t have the most powerful role, but today, his role is the most powerful in the world. I pray that he is watching the fraud and that he will reject the fraudulent electors.

We have been shafted by so many in 2020, that we’re even suspicious of Mike Pence. He would be the last person in the world to betray the United States. If Pence is a traitor, then the US is doomed.

We want fair elections without fraud. We want to have confidence in the election process. We demand a fair and correct count without election fraud and/or voter fraud.
And of course, on January 4, 2021…..
