Hi, there. It’s early afternoon here in Lithia, Florida, on Sunday, June 4, 2023. It’s a warm (79°F/26°C) and mostly sunny day in my corner of the Tampa Bay area. It’s going to be hot and humid as the afternoon progresses, though, cos it’s June in the subtropical zone.

I have been awake since 4:40 AM, so I’m exhausted even though it’s not very much past noon. I had breakfast sometime after 8, and at some point in the afternoon I’ll have some lunch, but I don’t feel like doing anything beyond shaving my mustache off – I have grown tired of facial hair altogether, so the ‘stache is going to go.

I was thinking about working on the novel even though it’s Sunday and one of my two days off from writing, but that early morning wakeup threw a wrench in my gears, so now I’m having an internal debate that goes something like this:

Writer Alex: Okay, there are a few sections of the rough draft that need to be revised sooner rather than later. You know, before we press on with the next scene and then on to Chapter 10. Why don’t we at least get started on that today? I mean, it’s not like we have a hot date or anything later.

Tired Alex: But it’s Sunday! And we’ve been up since 4:40 AM. Let’s do it tomorrow, okay?

Writer Alex: We should do it today.

Tired Alex: (Yawns) You do it, then. I’m going to take it easy this afternoon. Tomorrow is another day.

Writer Alex: Ugh. No Gone with the Wind references, please. That movie bites!

Tired Alex: That’s one thing we both see eye to eye on today, then.

Writer Alex: Anyhoo…we shouldn’t put off till tomorrow what we –

Tired Alex: Can do today. Yeah, yeah. I’ve heard that one, too.  Not a chance. I’m pooped, and since you’re also part of me, you are too.

And so on, and so forth, ad infinitum.

Seriously, though. I know that those revisions need to be made before I move forward with “new” material for Reunion: Coda (the current working title). I might forget to do the changes later – doubtful, but not impossible – and then the problematic material will make it into the published version. So dealing with the fixes sooner than later will save me from many headaches and a lot of extra work in the future.

However, I am tired, and it’s not like I’ll forget about making the changes between now and tomorrow. And I’ve noticed that I make my worst writing goofs either when I’m in a rush or when I’m forcing myself to write when I should be, at least, resting.

This is what I looked like when I was 23 or 24. I was studying journalism at what was then called Miami-Dade Community College, and this was the headshot that appeared in my “sig box” when I wrote op-ed columns for the student newspaper at what was, in the 1980s, called the South Campus.

In any case, I do have a mustache to get rid of – and that’s an easier task to take on right now. So, that’s what I’ll do.

Until next time, Dear Reader, stay safe, stay healthy, and I’ll catch you on the sunny side of things.
