“That’s the magic of revisions – every cut is necessary, and every cut hurts, but something new always grows.” ― Kelly Barnhill

Just when I thought there were no more glaring errors in Reunion: A Story – and wrote On Writing & Storytelling: Is There an End to the ‘Constant Revisions on Kindle Direct Publishing’ Saga? I Hope So! – with a “Whew! That’s over!” mindset, I found out that I was wrong.
It turns out that there was one small but vexing error in the novella. (Sharp-eyed readers who know the proper use of punctuation will see it in one of the screengrabs.)
So, of course, around 4:20 or so – not long after I finally see the glaring mistake (which I might have caught earlier had I not been so tired, mostly mentally, although eyestrain certainly played its part as well) – I went to my Kindle Create app, fixed the damn error, then uploaded the corrected manuscript to Kindle Direct Publishing’s website.
While I was on the KDP site, I not only updated the manuscript file, I also made a few necessary adjustments to the copy on the back cover blurb of the paperback edition. No rewriting was involved – I just made what you might call a cosmetic tweak to make the blurb look better on the reverse cover of the book.
I briefly considered changing the cover art for the Kindle edition but settled for allowing KDP to make the title consistent with the paperback version and let it add “A Novella” as a subtitle.
I expected the update to go live late at night – 11 PM or even midnight – but at 6:12 PM EDT, I received the “your book is now live and available for purchase in the Kindle Store” email from KDP.
Of course, this means that the timeline for automatic updates of the Kindle e-book or ordering the paperback has changed. I suppose e-book copy owners (including me) will see the revisions trickle onto their digital copies at some time between Friday and Sunday. And, to make sure readers get the latest version of Reunion, I think the best thing to do is wait till Monday, July 10, to order the paperback edition.
Tomorrow I plan to work on Reunion: Coda, so I’m off to bed to get a good night’s sleep.
Talk to you later!
