If you’re a regular visitor to this space (Thank you for that, by the way.), you may have noticed that I have developed an affinity for the song “All the Things You Are.”

Originally written in 1939 by composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II for the Broadway musical Very Warm for May, “All the Things You Are” has been a popular jazz standard for over 80 years. It has been covered by a wide variety of artists – ranging from Artie Shaw and Helen Forrest to Carly Simon and Ella Fitzgerald – in different forms. There are instrumental arrangements in different styles. There are several vocal versions as well; many of them often leave out the first verse and jump to the chorus or B part of the song. Solo singers have performed “All the Things You Are,” as well as choral groups and smaller ensembles.

As I take my rest break before tackling Chapter 11 of Reunion: Coda, I thought I would share with you some of my favorite covers of “All the Things You Are.” I listen to it frequently when I’m writing my novel; I see it as a manifestation of the way that my “I-Guy” sees the women that he is in love with at different stages of his life. I know that if I were in love with a woman – I’m currently not in such a situation – I would sing this to her on Valentine’s Day…or on any special occasion.

    1. Ah, the Sinatra version. That’s a nice one, Pooja. Of the “abridged versions,” I think I could sing that one…by myself. (Except for the very end. I can’t sustain that ending. Not with my voice.)

I like Antonio Go’s cover (the top one) a great deal. And I like the choral ones a lot, too.
