On Writing & Storytelling: Getting Back in the Swing of Things – and Some Ideas for the Cover Art

This is one of the covers I “tweaked” from a Canva template in the “free to use” section of the site.

Hi, there, Constant Readers. I hope youโ€™re having a good Wednesday โ€“ or, if youโ€™re on the other side of the International Date Line, Thursday โ€“ and the second Hump Day of October 2023.

I donโ€™t know how โ€œgoodโ€ my Wednesday is going to be; I woke up just over an hour ago โ€“ I finally got a good nightโ€™s restful sleep, and even though I did wake up once at 5:15 AM, I was able to cop a few more zโ€™s until 8:45 AM Eastern Daylight Time.  After two nights of not sleeping well, I feel a bit more rested today. Who knows? Maybe Iโ€™ll be able to get Reunion: Codaโ€™s Chapter 12 started this afternoon.

The variable here, of course, is how high my stress levels are, and if Iโ€™ll be able to focus on work instead of worrying about both my short-term and long-term future. Iโ€™d rather work on my novel, especially now that (a) I am 90% sure that Iโ€™m only three or four chapters away from the endpoint, and (b) my self-imposed deadline for publication is getting ever closer.

On Writing and Storytelling: Up Front โ€“ What the Cover of the Novel Might Look Like

This was my first attempt to create a cover using one of the free-to-use templates on Canva.

Speaking of Reunion: Codaโ€ฆ.

Even though at the moment Chapter 12 is still in a nebulous โ€œI have an idea for it; I just donโ€™t know if Iโ€™ll pull it offโ€ state, I need to at least have a general idea of what the cover for the novel will look like so Iโ€™ll have it ready when itโ€™s time to upload the novel to Kindle Direct Publishing.

Hmm. I have a cool idea for the chapter. But, will it work?

Iโ€™m a writer, not an illustrator, and even though I can edit page cover design templates on the Canva site, I needed someone with experience with visual arts and storytelling โ€“ as well as the ability to use software specifically geared for graphic design, such as Adobe Express โ€“ to create the artwork for Reunion: Coda.

Luckily, Juan Carlos Hernandez, my friend and filmmaking partner, volunteered to do the cover art, and he has already submitted some possible ideas based on what he has read from the manuscript. Here are a few of them:

Well, my rest period is about to begin, and in any case, I donโ€™t have much to add, so Iโ€™ll close for now. Until next time, stay safe, stay healthy, and Iโ€™ll catch you on the sunny side of things.

The one you posted recently. The first one in the series.

      2. Oh, that one.

I’m not sure if we are going to use the ones I sort-of, kind-of adapted from the Canva templates in the “free to use” category. I do like the color combination, but I’d like a more NYC vibe than an out-in-the-country one. If I were to keep it, I’d have to write a scene that matches it…and so far, my two 2000-era protagonists are strictly Big City folks.
