Late Morning/Midday, Sunday, May 26, 2024, Madison, New Hampshire

Spring in Madison

Hi, everyone. It’s a warm spring day here in  Madison, New Hampshire. The current temperature is 74°F (23°C) under mostly sunny conditions. With humidity at 51% and the wind blowing from the east-southeast at 2 MPH (4 Km/H), the heat index is 84°F (29°C). The National Weather Service, however, is warning that the temperature in bodies of water (lakes and rivers) is still low and that people should avoid bathing in them since there is a high risk of hypothermia. Today’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies and a high of 79°F (26°C). Tonight, the skies will be partly cloudy. The low will be 54°F (12°C).

Weekend Update, Part the First, or: An Uneventful Saturday

As is often the case with weekends when I don’t work on Reunion: Coda, yesterday was an unsatisfactorily boring Saturday. Yes, it was the 47th Star Wars Day, and yes, I tried to enjoy it by watching Star Wars content.

I watched Obi-Wan Kenobi on 4K Blu-ray at home for the second time, hoping it would cheer me up yesterday, but it didn’t. I hardly noticed what was happening in that distant galaxy. I like New Hampshire, but I feel lonely in a rural area. I’ve said before that quiet is good for writing, but in other ways, I prefer city life.

I also spent quite a bit of time online – again, just to have some interaction with other people, even if it’s long distance and not face to face – and played a naval simulation titled Fleet Command. It’s not a new game – it was originally released by Electronic Arts in 1996, and I got it on Steam for $5.99 – and it was once titled Jane’s Fleet Command, but it is somewhat reminiscent of Larry Bond’s more complicated Harpoon series. It’s not going to replace Regiments as my go-to war game, but I learned that I can understand the basics of naval warfare just as well as I do the basics of modern land combat.

So, there’s that.

My hair is a bit longer than it was when I posed for this photo in December.

I also worried a lot about practical adult life needs. I really need to get a haircut and do some grocery shopping. I looked into ordering food from Hannaford to Go, but they don’t accept EBT cards as payment for deliveries. I’m trying to reduce my credit card use, so I will only go that route if it’s absolutely necessary. On the other hand, Walmart accepts EBT cards, but they don’t deliver unless you subscribe to their Walmart Plus service. So, I still need to go to brick and mortar stores in town, whether I like it or not.

That, Dear Readers, is how my Saturday went.

As for today?

Well, Sunday is almost half over, but I will do my best to cheer up.  I might rewatch Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny  (at least I have all of my Indy franchise Blu-rays and DVDs available), or I could give Obi-Wan Kenobi another try. (It is a good show;  my mood  affects my ability to enjoy it.)

That’s all I have for you today, so I’ll close for now. Until next time, stay safe, stay healthy, and I’ll catch you on the sunny side of things.

  1. It is certainly beautiful where you live but the difficulty in getting your needs met is not great. I’ve never had anything delivered from Walmart and I don’t know how much the Walmart Plus service you mention cost. Hopefully you’ll find a solution.

    1. It’s frustrating. In a large city, Amazon delivers groceries ASAP, and they accept EBT cards. I’m guessing that Hannaford to Go doesn’t because of the security measures EBT cards have…you need to confirm your PIN number a few times during a transaction to prevent fraud/ID theft. That, plus Hannaford to Go probably wouldn’t be able to add a delivery fee to EBT orders under $150.

Also, as much as I like ordering stuff online, I need to get out every so often, even if it’s just to buy food at Hannaford or Market Basket. I can’t spend the rest of my life rooted to one house 24/7 with no chance of making friends or dating. A Plan B will be needed. I like New Hampshire, but I’m not a “country boy” at heart.

      1. Yes when you live on the country side you’ve got to have a way of getting around. I lived in the north Swedish countryside the first third of my life. Even though not everyone had a car, people had bicycles, mopeds, public transportation, mostly buses, or someone to drive them. Not having any of that is extremely difficult when you can’t walk to places. Luckily for us, buses are very common and inexpensive in north Sweden.

      2. If Florida didn’t have such a dismal system to assist low-income folks who need affordable housing, and if there had been an opening at a place that we were looking at in Tampa, I might have stayed in the same area where I lived. Unfortunately, that was not possible.

I’m going to do my best and try to roll with the punches, but it’s not easy. (And, if a Plan B comes up, I’ll implement it. Probably not soon, but…)

I thought May 4th was Star Wars Day! Sounds like this might be the anniversary of the first release? I bet that was 47 years ago! I remember seeing it in summer, so a Memorial Day weekend release sounds right.

    1. The May the 4th be With You “thing” is more of a cutesy marketing tactic than it is an anniversary, I’m a purist about such things, so for me, May 25 is, and always will be, the true Star Wars Day. As Darth Vader would say about May 25, 1977…”It will be a day long remembered.”
