Madison Summer Almanac

Greetings, folks. It’s a gray and cool early summer day in my corner of Madison. The current temperature is 69°F (21°C) under mostly cloudy conditions. With humidity at 58% and the wind blowing from the west-northwest at 7 MPH (12 Km/H), the feels-like temperature is 73°F (23°C). Today’s forecast calls for scattered light rain showers and a high of 72°F (22°C). Tonight, the skies will be mostly clear. The low will be 56°F (13°C).

On Writing & Storytelling: Wrapping Up the Workweek

Writing Reunion: Coda has been slow for me lately. I had planned to work on it yesterday, but like always, I hit a wall after finishing a chapter. Maybe it’s my age, my surroundings, or just fatigue from sticking with the same project for so long, but sometimes my brain refuses to cooperate when I try to do anything more than edit and revise the manuscript.

But it’s not all doom and gloom, because I have advanced with my first novel. Here are the most important numbers as of today:

Cover Design: Juan Carlos Hernandez
  • Number of Chapters Completed (Including the Prologue): 17
  • Number of Pages (Including the Title Page): 390
  • Number of Words: 98,423

Note: The page size is six inches by nine inches, the recommended setting for paperbacks at Kindle Direct Publishing.

Reunion: Coda is on track to be out by the end of summer, fingers crossed. I feel like I’m getting close to wrapping up the novel; I have a rough idea of how Jim and Maddie’s story (and the whole Reunion Duology) will end, but I’m flying blind with no clear plan. So I can’t say for sure how many more chapters are left. I’m hoping for four tops, but stories tend to have a mind of their own when it comes to telling themselves.

Trying to Get Into ‘Weekend Mode’

I wanted to sleep well and wake up refreshed and ready to work on Reunion: Coda for an hour today. But no, I couldn’t. I hit the sack early enough (11:30 PM), but I woke up between 3 and 4 in the morning, and it took me ages to drift off again.

And, of course, when I opened my eyes the sun was out, but it was cold and the light was fading because of the growing clouds. My tiredness and the gloominess of the morning sky made me feel low, and I gave up on my plan to do some work.

Now my challenge is to switch to a weekend mode. It’s not what I planned to do, at least not for the whole day, but I’m exhausted and a bit annoyed – to say the least – but I have to try to relax and enjoy this chilly, gray, and maybe rainy Saturday.

In that spirit, I will close this post here. Until next time, stay safe, stay healthy, and I’ll catch you on the sunny (and hopefully warmer) side of things.
