Madison Summer Almanac

Hi, everyone. It’s a cool – but warming-up – early summer day in my corner of eastern New Hampshire. The current temperature is 73°F (23°C) under mostly sunny conditions. With the wind blowing from the south-southwest at 4 MPH (7 Km/H) and humidity at 56%, the heat index is 84°F (29°C). Today’s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and a high of 80°F (27°C). We can expect mostly clear skies and a low of 60°F (16°C) tonight. (Also, a heat advisory is in effect for much of the region, as it’s going to be humid and hot outside.)
Weekend Update, Part the Second: Summing Up My Sunday

What can I say about Sunday, June 16, 2024? Or, more specifically, how I spent it?
As expected, I stayed up too late on the night of June 15/16 and paid the price the next morning. I got out of bed later than I should have, feeling grumpy and bored, and wondering how to make the day fun (and keep my sanity intact).
As usual, my weekend was a typical routine of solitude and computing. I barely left my room, except for a quick peek outside, where I played solitaire/patience on my computer, enjoyed some classical tunes from my Amazon Music app, worried a little about my book sales (still nothing this month), and indulged in an hour of Regiments before heading to the kitchen for a late-night snack around 9:30 or so.

My “adventurous” Sunday came to a close with the bonus features on my Blu-ray of Tora! Tora! Tora! I was feeling drowsy by then (it was past 10:30 PM or so), so I snoozed through the longer “making of” extra (the Blu-ray has two documentaries on how the 1970 Pearl Harbor docudrama was created). I remember that Darryl F. Zanuck, the boss of 20th Century Fox, wanted to make another World War II epic after his 1962 hit The Longest Day, but the production was harder and pricier, and Fox delayed shooting Tora! Tora! Tora! for a year because of a bunch of box office bombs that almost put the studio out of business.
As I zapped my TV into silence with my faithful remote, the only thought on my mind was “Maybe I’ll get some writing done for Reunion: Coda at work tomorrow. This novel needs to be wrapped up soon!”
On Writing & Storytelling: Action This Day

Well, Dear Reader. Here we are, on the verge of another writing adventure. It’s almost time for me to take my daily noon break, where I eat and chill for a bit, and the thought that haunted me before I drifted off last night is still nagging me.

I don’t know how much – or any – new writing I’ll squeeze out when I get back to my desk in two hours. I had a small breakfast around 10 AM, but I’m starving and my brain is still fuzzy even though I’ve been awake since before 8 AM. And, to make matters worse, I have no clue about Scene Two – except that it shows “Jim at Work in Columbia University” – and so I don’t have a clear picture of what my “I-Guy” is going to do today. Hopefully, I’ll have more inspiration after I grab a bite and relax for a while. Otherwise, I’ll be wasting my time, creatively speaking, without advancing the story.
Anyway, send me some positive vibes. I could use all the good luck – and more readers – I can find!
