What challenges did you face while writing from the perspective of a history professor specializing in modern conflicts?

I studied journalism and mass communications in college, but I took so many history classes at Miami-Dade Community College in the mid- to late 1980s that you could say I almost minored in it. Or maybe even double-majored if you like that better.

The real challenge is crafting Jim’s lecture dialogue for his classes at Columbia University’s Fayerweather Hall. For this, I have to tap into my memories of my history professors at Miami-Dade, each with their unique lecturing style.

Picking historical events, especially battles, campaigns, or political and military leaders for Jim Garraty to cover in Reunion: A Story or Reunion: Coda is pretty straightforward since I’m familiar with topics like World War II episodes, including Operation Market-Garden, which connects to teenaged Jim’s relationship with Marty. The real challenge is crafting Jim’s lecture dialogue for his classes at Columbia University’s Fayerweather Hall. For this, I have to tap into my memories of my history professors at Miami-Dade, each with their unique lecturing style. To give Professor Garraty a distinctive teaching vibe, I blended the styles of Professors Charles Cox and Paige Cubbison, and even threw in a touch of Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones for good measure.
