Hey there, folks!
It’s another gorgeous early spring day here in South Florida. Right now, it’s a pleasant 70°F (21°C) with sunny skies. The humidity is a bit on the sticky side at 88%, and there’s a gentle breeze blowing from the south at 4 MPH (6 Km/h). It feels like a cozy 79°F (26°C). The forecast for this afternoon promises more sunshine with a high of 86°F (30°C).
Even though it’s Sunday, I’ve been up since 6 AM. I tried to catch a few more winks, but after a quick bathroom break, I found myself wide awake under the covers, my mind buzzing about whether I should register Reunion: Coda with the Copyright Office, even though it’s not quite finished.
After a long and fretful interval – it might have been 20 minutes, but it felt like an eternity – in which I wavered between registering my novel with the Library of Congress now or in April, when Reunion: Coda should be more complete, I decided to go ahead and do it today.

Reflecting on the decision to register Reunion: Coda, I couldn’t help but chuckle at my previous self-publishing adventures. When I first put out Reunion: A Story, the beginning of my Reunion Duology, back in 2018, I had zero clue about copyright registrations. It wasn’t until January of this year that I finally got around to doing it—talk about procrastination at its finest!

As I sat there considering whether to wait until April when the novel would be more polished or go ahead today, I remembered the “better safe than sorry” mantra. While I am definitely worried about my Visa bill now, I also feel a huge wave of relief knowing that Reunion: Coda is officially registered. Even though I’m not swimming in dough these days, I logged onto the Copyright Office’s website, ready to tackle the beast.

The whole process took about 30 minutes, navigating through the labyrinthine registration form, coughing up the $65 fee (ouch!), and uploading my not-quite-finished manuscript. Compared to my January nerve-wracking experience of registering Reunion: A Story, this felt like a walk in the park—though the lack of caffeine isn’t helping my nerves! But hey, peace of mind is worth every penny, right?
With the deed finally done, I can now put my worries to rest (well, most of them) and focus on enjoying the rest of my Sunday. The sunshine beckons, and while I’m still uncaffeinated, I’m ready to embrace a day of relaxation and rejuvenation. Cheers to spring, and here’s to a day well spent.

My experience with Reunion: A Story taught me the value of taking care of these sometimes overlooked (and a bit expensive) aspects of a writer’s life. 🙂
