I gave the yearbook to Ann Saroyan. She was a cheerleader. Not anymore. She wanted me to sign it. I wrote: To Ann Saroyan: You were good in English. It was all right. Jim. I closed the yearbook and gave it back.

Ann Saroyan – she wore regular clothes; I never saw her like that – smiled. Her eyes were hazel. They were bright. “Thanks, Jim,” she said. She gave me my yearbook. She wrote: Good luck. Ann Saroyan, Class of ’83.

“Thank you,” I said. I closed my yearbook.

Ann smiled again. She was pretty. I stayed there for a while. It was strange to see her in jeans and a shirt. She was nice. She kissed me on the cheek. “Goodbye, Jim,” she said. She looked at the clock. She took her things and left. She wanted more signatures.

I watched her go. The classroom was empty. Mrs. DeVargas was gone. She had to grade exams. She went to the office. I took my backpack. I put my yearbook in it. I left the classroom.

If you enjoyed this version of a scene from Reunion, my novella, please consider buying the real book, available from Amazon in e-book and paperback editions.

  1. AI captured Hemingway, I think. His style is starkly different from the other authors featured. I guess I am not a big fan of his very short sentences and simple vocabulary, but then, I also don’t prefer an ornate or overly academic style either.

Very interesting AI series, Alex! ❤
