A Democratic Voter’s Response to Republican ‘Trump is Still President’ Memes After the 2026 Midterm Elections

This is my response to a post by a Republican from Miami that was intended to minimize her party’s massive nationwide defeat in the 2026 midterm election. I wrote the original draft on my Facebook profile, but I revised it for today’s post:

To my Republican friends (the handful I still have, anyway):

Please don’t remind us that even though we Democrats won a sizeable majority in Congress yesterday, Donald Trump is still President and has veto power and/or the authority to issue executive orders. We know that. We took civics in high school, too. Some of us even went to college and took advanced courses in government and history. We know how the system is supposed to work.

We also don’t need your silly, defensive, and passive-aggressive mythology that all we Democrats do is obstruct your Dear Leader for the sake of being the opposition party. You also don’t want us to carry out any investigations, Congressional hearings, or impeachments, either of the sitting President or any of his Cabinet members (especially SecDef Pete Hegseth). You’re basically saying, “You all need to let President Trump alone instead of hounding him for political reasons.”

That’s not patriotism, folks. That’s blind obedience to perhaps the most criminal and corrupt President in American history.

If there is a third impeachment of Mr. Trump, or one of Pete Hegseth, it won’t be mainly for, as you claim, political revenge. Your party has had control of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches for quite a while now. Aside from tax breaks for the super wealthy, the GOP has accomplished nothing.

In the first half of his second term as President, Donald Trump has:

  • Damaged diplomatic relations with most of our long-standing allies
  • Replaced the board of directors of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, installed himself as its head, and temporarily renamed the Center by adding his name. And when the courts ordered him to reverse the renaming, his toadies on the board closed the Kennedy Center for “renovations”
  • Raised the cost of living in the United States for almost everyone by imposing tariffs on imports from other countries and starting a war with Iran. The Iranians then closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint through which 20% of the world’s oil must transit by sea

And then there’s this: Trump promised a lot of stuff in 2024: lower prices on everything from gas to groceries, no more endless foreign wars, a full release of the Epstein files, and that he’d end the Russia-Ukraine war with a couple of phone calls shortly after January 20, 2025.

It’s November 2026. None of those promises were kept.
