Hi there, Dear Reader!

Today — smack in the middle of June — is Flag Day, marking the day in 1777 when the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes: thirteen stripes, thirteen stars, and one very ambitious “new constellation.”

It’s also the 251st birthday of the United States Army, born on June 14, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized rifle companies to join the forces near Boston — five days before George Washington received his commission and long before anyone thought to put candles on a cake.
I hear there may be other pageantry in the nation’s capital today, but not every parade needs a salute.
