Happy Flag Day! (And Happy 251st Birthday to the U.S. Army!)

Hi there, Dear Reader!

Today — smack in the middle of June — is Flag Day, marking the day in 1777 when the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes: thirteen stripes, thirteen stars, and one very ambitious “new constellation.”

It’s also the 251^st birthday of the United States Army, born on June 14, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized rifle companies to join the forces near Boston — five days before George Washington received his commission and long before anyone thought to put candles on a cake.

I hear there may be other pageantry in the nation’s capital today, but not every parade needs a salute.
