Tonight, It Happens

There’s a strange electricity in the air today — not the kind that crackles through the Florida sky when the afternoon storms roll in, but the quieter, internal kind. The kind that sits behind the ribs and reminds you, repeatedly, that something long‑awaited is finally about to happen.

The Jim Garraty Chronicles goes live tonight.
It’s an odd feeling, knowing that the book will cross that invisible threshold while I’m still awake. Usually, releases happen in the dead hours, when the world is asleep and I’m left to discover the change in the morning. But not this time. Midnight UTC is eight o’clock here, which means I’ll be sitting right here — probably with a can of Coke nearby, probably refreshing the page more times than I’ll admit — when the pre‑order badge disappears and the book becomes real in the eyes of the world.

Excitement is the easy part to name. It’s the thrill of seeing years of work finally coalesce into something tangible. It’s knowing that readers — some familiar, some new — will soon be stepping into Garraty’s world, meeting the characters, walking the roads I’ve spent so long paving. It’s the satisfaction of finishing something that once felt impossibly large.
But anxiety has its place too. Not the paralyzing kind, just the low hum of anticipation. The questions that surface even when you know you’ve done the work: Will readers connect with it? Will they see what I hoped they’d see? Will the stories land the way they did in my head, in my drafts, in all those late‑night revisions?
It’s a vulnerable thing, releasing a book. You spend so long living with it privately — shaping it, arguing with it, coaxing it into coherence — and then suddenly it’s no longer yours alone. Tonight marks that moment of letting go.
Will readers connect with it? Will they see what I hoped they’d see? Will the stories land the way they did in my head, in my drafts, in all those late‑night revisions?

And yet, I’m grateful that I get to witness it in real time. There’s something fitting about being awake for the transition, present for the moment the book steps out into the world. It feels like watching a ship you built slide down the ramp and touch the water for the first time.
So yes — excitement, anxiety, anticipation, pride. All of it. And all of it is happening tonight.
The countdown is running. The book is ready. And I’m here, awake, watching the hours fall away.
Note for non-Kindle readers: the paperback edition will be published on Friday, July 17.
