Hi, folks—and happy new workweek, if that’s the sort of thing one can say before the coffee has fully reported for duty.

Today marks the first day of a new workweek for me, and if all goes according to plan, I’ll begin work this afternoon on a new Jim Garraty story—my fifth since 1998.

I already have a rough draft of the opening pages—a rarity for me, I know—and a fair sense of the story’s scope. It will probably be a novella or a novelette; I don’t have the stamina, or frankly the desire, to tackle another novel just yet. I even have a basic plotline and a title: And the Horse You Rode in On. That may not sound like a grand literary arsenal, but it’s enough to get me moving.

I don’t know how long this new story will take to finish, but—Calliope willing—I’ll make a proper start today.
